Nivalis Nights Performance Issues: Causes, Settings and Fixes

The frame drops are not a graphics problem, and lowering settings will not fix them. 42 of the 100 most helpful Steam reviews mention FPS, stutter or performance, and the most-upvoted review in that set blames "more than 5 NPCs". ION LANDS has published no bottleneck profile, but their own devlog plus player measurements point at per-character CPU work, not pixel fill. No upscaling, and no patch date as of 30 September 2026.

Sources pulled 30 September 2026, 23:09-23:20 UTC; counts move hourly.

How big the complaint is, measured

Of the first 100 reviews the Steam review API returns in default most-helpful order, spanning 12 languages, 42 mention frame rate, stutter or performance on a strict word match (20 negative, 22 positive) — 47 if glued spellings such as "60fps" and "framerates" count too.

Upvotes In the reviewer's words
592 "I actually have higher FPS in CP2077 with path tracing on than in this game when looking somewhere with more than 5 NPCs."
570 9950X3D + RTX 5090, 1440p high: "I go below 60 FPS with the lowest hitting 35 FPS… There also seems to be no difference in performance regardless of what settings i use."
241 "constantly at 20 frames with everything on low and reducing the detail completely destroys the game without any frame boost."

Nobody in that sample argues about settings. They argue about crowds.

What the developer says costs the frame

The May 30, 2026 optimization devlog is the only first-party technical document ION LANDS has published.

Official source: May 2026 Development Update: Optimization — ION LANDS, 30 May 2026

  • Voxels without a voxel engine. "Although the world is built entirely from voxels, it does not use a traditional voxel engine. This results in much higher polygon counts than usual, so we rely heavily on multiple levels of detail (LODs) to maintain performance without sacrificing visual quality."
  • Three NPC tiers. The "Ghost system" strips visuals, animation and physics from out-of-district characters, disables visuals for in-district characters out of camera view — "costly operations such as updating animation state are not performed every frame" — and materializes only visible ones. Character templates wait pre-loaded in a pool, because materializing a ghost "causes noticeable performance hiccups".
  • 10,000+ persistent objects run through the same system, "like tables, chairs, dishes etc." Fishing adds more: "over 1,000 fish" individually simulated.
  • The budget is brutal. "For a game to run at 60 FPS, the budget per frame is only 16.66 ms."

The expensive work is per-character CPU simulation, and 16.66 ms leaves no room for a crowd.

Nobody has published the actual bottleneck

ION LANDS says the Unity Profiler lets them "identify the bottlenecks", but no profiler capture or frame-time breakdown has been released. The diagnosis above is inference from their architecture plus player measurements — not a 505 statement.

What players measured, and the pattern

Two sources, kept apart. The launch thread Performance overall seems shocking from early adopters, 15 posts:

  • i5-12400F + RTX 3060, 1080p high: "the game uses 40% of GPU on high settings 1080p, but can't maintain 60 fps, instead deciding to drop into low 50s depending on amount of NPCs."
  • RTX 2070, default high: "50 to 70 FPS on default high. Only dropping abrubt [sic] and shortly to 30 FPS when walking fast toward a group of NPC then stabilizing shortly after."
  • Not everyone: one poster has "9800 x3d and a 3080 rtx ti everything maxed out" running "4k absolutely flawless, no frame drops"; the next post disputes it — "my pc is better than yours and there are definitely issues with this game."

From the review sample, two separate players who each had 4 upvotes when I pulled it:

  • i7-13700KF + RTX 4070: 3440x1440 on ultra with V-Sync off gives "frames capped at 144 without any real problems", but that player watches GPU load "…sometimes my GPU is at 50% load and then suddenly its at 100%".
  • No hardware named: "At 1440p with Vsync on, I'm getting ~24-48 fps in most city areas. I DO get up to ~110 fps while in my apartment or an enclosed space." Their conclusion: "the vast, vast majority of the performance issues are down to NPC density."

Frame rate tracks how many NPCs are visible, not which GPU you own — on a CPU-bound frame the GPU is waiting.

Confirm it is yours in thirty seconds

Watch the frame counter on a crowded street, then step into your apartment and watch again. If the second number roughly doubles, you are CPU-bound on NPCs and no preset closes that gap.

Why there is no DLSS, FSR or frame generation

The FAQ is unambiguous about the absence and careful about the future: "Despite our best efforts, we are unable to do so. This is due to the Unity Engine version used for the game being quite dated and not supporting upscaling… We are evaluating if this can however be added in the future."

Official source: Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs (2026) — "Do you support DLSS/FSR or any other upscaling technologies?"

Evaluating is not a commitment. Both official targets are stated at native resolution with "no upscaling utilised"; system requirements has each VRAM tier.

Which settings actually move the number

505's advice: "…lowering the graphics preset first and then adjusting individual settings from there", plus current drivers and closing background apps.

On the level of detail setting: 505 confirms "several graphics presets… or fine tune individual settings", but no slider name, range or value has been published. Across those 100 reviews, "level of detail" appears once, in a player praising the visuals; none names an LOD control.

No LOD value to quote here

You will find "set the LOD slider to 0.01" in circulation. I could not find that claim in the review sample, the performance thread, the FAQ or the devlog, so this page does not repeat it.

The official troubleshooting order, in full

The FAQ's answer to "The game isn't running as expected. What can I try?" is five steps: update your graphics drivers; verify game files in Steam; close background apps and overlays; restart the game or your PC; check your PC meets the minimum requirements on the store page.

If that fails, the pinned Read First / Known Issues thread (posted 29 Sep, edited the same day, zero comments) is where bugs go, and it holds the published backlog: frame rate in NPC-heavy areas, quest dialogue, NPC pathing, venue placement, Steam Deck performance, clipping. Note what it adds to step four — if performance drops "after several hours of play", restarting helps, and nothing on record says what accumulates over those hours.

Attach these two files or the ticket goes nowhere

The thread asks for a DxDiag report (Win+R, type dxdiag, Save All Information) and the logs in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\ION LANDS\Nivalis Nights: Player.log and Player-prev.log, each overwritten by the next launch. Reports go to support.505games.com.

What 505 has actually promised about a fix

Sixteen of my 100 sampled reviews carry a developer response, and they fall into four groups that never overlap:

  • Five are one identical template, word for word — on the reviews with 513, 570, 241, 64 and 38 upvotes: "frame rate can vary in areas with lots of NPCs… restarting the game should help, or try setting your PC's power mode to performance."
  • Four say the work is underway without detail (300, 103, 25 and 12 upvotes). Two of them share this wording: "We know performance isn't quite where we want it to be yet… we will let you know."
  • Three concede the advice landed badly. The 592-upvote CP2077 comparison got "We're so sorry that you're experiencing issues", plus "improving performance is a major focus for the team right now." The player who called the advice "dismissive" got "We completely understand how the 'restart your computer' response could have come across as dismissive, and that wasn't our intention." A third wrote that "…our previous troubleshooting responses came across. For that, we apologise."
  • Four are thanks only (301, 233, 153 and 38 upvotes).

The scheduled statement is one line in the Known Issues thread: "Patches to improve things further are already in the works." No version number, no date, no changelog, and the news feed still ends at the 29 September launch announcement. The review score page tracks what those patches would have to move; handheld numbers are in Steam Deck.

FAQ

Why is it running badly when my GPU sits at 40%? Because the frame is not GPU-bound. Players report 40% GPU load while dropping into the low 50s at 1080p high, and frame rate doubling indoors.

Does lowering graphics quality fix the frame drops? No, according to people who tried. One on a 9950X3D and RTX 5090 reports no difference whatever the settings; another reports 20 FPS on low with no gain. Lowering the preset helps load times, not frame rate.

Will Nivalis Nights get DLSS or FSR? Not yet and not promised. The only forward statement is "We are evaluating if this can however be added in the future."

Is there a patch date for the performance problems? No. "Patches to improve things further are already in the works" is the entire schedule, and no patch notes exist.
