Nivalis Nights Age Rating: What Steam Shows and What 505 Doesn't

Nivalis Nights has no ESRB rating and no PEGI rating. Pull the store page on the US, UK, French or Australian storefront and there is no rating badge at all, and Valve's own appdetails API returns no ESRB or PEGI field for app 1488490. Two national ratings do exist and are publicly visible: Brazil rates it 14, Germany rates it 16 — and neither the store description nor a single one of 505's announcements mentions them.

What the Store Page Does Not Show

I fetched the live store page for six storefronts on 2026-09-30 and counted the rating markup. Four render nothing at all.

So the honest answer to "what is the Nivalis Nights age rating" is: it depends on which storefront your Steam account is set to, and for a large share of the world the answer is "nobody has rated this yet."

The only content disclosure 505 wrote is a block titled Mature Content Description, and the whole thing is two sentences:

The game occasionally features characters in revealing outfits. One quest includes depictions of corpses.

That is the entire developer-authored content warning. It is not a rating, and 505 attaches no age number to it.

Official source: the wording above is the developer's own, shown under "Mature Content Description" on the Nivalis Nights Steam store page and mirrored field-for-field in the content_descriptors.notes value of the Steam appdetails API.

The Two Ratings That Do Exist

The appdetails endpoint carries a ratings object. It holds exactly two entries, both with "banned": "0" and "use_age_gate": "0":

• dejus — Brazil: "rating": "14", "required_age": "14", descriptors Linguagem imprópria, Drogas ilícitas, Conteúdo sexual (offensive language, illicit drugs, sexual content — my translation of Valve's own strings).
• steam_germany — Germany: "rating": "16", "required_age": "16", descriptors Gewalt, Drogen, Sexuelle Andeutungen (violence, drugs, sexual innuendo).

Both entries also carry "rating_generated": "1". Valve does not document what that field means, and this page does not guess at it. The same endpoint confirms required_age is 0 for the base game, which is why no age gate appears in front of the purchase.

One more field is worth naming so nobody misreads it: the store page HTML contains "excluded_content_descriptors":[3,4] inside its data-userinfo attribute. Valve does not publish what those two numbers mean, so this page does not interpret them. They are not the same thing as the ids: [5] inside content_descriptors, and they are not a rating.

What the Ratings Name That the Store Page Never Mentions

This is the part that matters for a parent. Read the store description, the feature list, and all fifteen official announcements from 2026-03-31 onward and the words "drugs" and "violence" never appear; 505 frames lethal danger only as a serial-killer plot premise. Both ratings name drugs and violence outright. That is the gap between a marketing page and a ratings-board assessment.

What the Game Actually Contains

Everything below is traceable to a source, not to the cyberpunk styling:

• Nightlife venues you can own and run. The launch announcement's feature list runs "from noodle stands and hole-in-the-wall bars to the city's hottest restaurants and nightclubs." The store short description says the same thing: you "climb your way up to own the city's top restaurants and premier nightclubs."
• Alcohol on the menu. A Steam achievement, Offer Drinks, carries the official description "Offer drinks on the menu in one of your venues," unlocked by 55.6% of players when I read the page on 2026-09-30 — that counter moves.
• Romance and relationships. The official FAQ refuses to elaborate — "We really don't want to spoil too much here. But... You meet various citizens along the way. Your choices affect the type of relationship you have with them, be it romantic or otherwise." The March 2026 Q&A is blunter: relationships run "from friendship to rivalry, business partnerships, or romance." A 0.1% achievement called Find Love carries no official description, and is the closest thing to a confirmation that the romance path is a real, completable thread. • After-dark risk. The March 2026 Q&A says "day and night life offer different opportunities (after all there's a curfew for a reason)," and a 9.9% achievement called After Curfew carries no official description. The store features also promise you "commit sabotage to your competitors" during curfew, and that "What happens to them, can happen to you as well." See Nivalis Nights Curfew and Day Night Cycle.
• Corpses in one quest, and revealing outfits — the two claims in the developer content note, nothing more.
• Drugs and violence, which appear nowhere in 505's own copy but are named by both the Brazilian and German rating descriptors.

Shared PC, Shared Account, Younger Players in the House

The practical question is not "what is the rating" but "what will a Steam install actually hand you." What the sources support:

• No age gate, no purchase block. required_age is 0 and both rating entries set use_age_gate to 0. Nothing stops anyone with a Steam account from buying and playing.
• No strangers, ever. The official FAQ: "Nivalis Nights is designed as a single-player experience, and there are no multiplayer or co-op features planned." No online element puts a stranger's words or actions on a shared machine — see Nivalis Nights Multiplayer.
• It plays offline. "You will not require an internet connection when playing Nivalis Nights other than what the platforms require to update the game," and cloud saves "require an internet connection, but you can still play offline."
• Progress is safe and interruptible. "Nivalis Nights autosaves at the end of each day, and you can also save manually at any time from the Pause Menu during gameplay." A shared session can be saved, closed and resumed without losing your day.
• No official mod scene. Asked directly about modding tools, 505 answered: "This isn't part of the game's scope at the moment."
• PC is the only platform at launch. No console or handheld build means no console storefront with its own rating to compare against — see Nivalis Nights Platforms.

What Has Not Been Announced

Three gaps, stated plainly:

1. No ESRB rating. Not pending and unpublished as far as the store page shows — absent.
2. No PEGI rating, and no IARC rating for the European storefronts.
3. No separate rating for the soundtrack DLC. Nivalis Nights Soundtrack (appid 5259980) returns content_descriptors: {"ids": [], "notes": null} and rating entries of l for DEJUS and 0 for Germany — audio-only content with nothing flagged.

One thing out loud: 505 has never published an "appropriate for X" statement, and neither has this page. Nothing in the evidence supports "suitable for 12-year-olds" or "not for under-16s" as a verdict. What is verifiable is the disclosure text, the two national ratings, and the list of systems that exist. Where a household needs a firm answer, the only honest source is a 505 support ticket, linked from the FAQ thread.

What is the age rating in Germany and Brazil? Germany shows 16+ with descriptors for violence, drugs and sexual innuendo. Brazil shows DEJUS 14 with descriptors for offensive language, illicit drugs and sexual content.

Is the game violent? The German rating descriptor names violence outright. 505's own copy describes a serial killer on the loose but never uses the word violence, and the developer content note covers only outfits and corpses.
