Nivalis Nights Beginner Guide: What to Do in Your First Hour

You do not start this game with a restaurant empire. You start with one noodle stand called Ramen Noir, a city that shows you no local map, and enough systems running at once that most players hit a wall before their first full day ends. Below is the first-hour loop in the order the game asks for it, then the five places new players get stuck — each labelled player report, because 505 has documented none of them.

What you actually inherit

The store page frames the whole run in one line: "Start humble with a noodle stand, then climb your way up to own the city's top restaurants and premier nightclubs." The achievement list names that stand. Debt Free reads: "You did it! Ramen Noir is debt-free. Congratulations!" It is the only place the game's own text uses the name, and it confirms both where you start and that you start in debt.

The second gate is equally official. Own 2 Venues reads: "Start operating 2 venues. You need to gain a permit to lease your second venue." Expansion needs a permit; 505 has published no cost, tiers or qualification, so anyone quoting you a permit price is guessing. The economics live in the business and money guide; this page stays on order of operations.

The first-hour loop

  1. Serve one person. First customer — "You have served the first customer." — is the real tutorial completion. Nothing else in hour one matters if this does not pop.
  2. Put something on the menu. Offer Drinks and Offer a Dessert are separate menu actions, not one. 505's menu announcement explains why they are fiddly: a dish needs "the right recipes and ingredients, as well as the right equipment."
  3. Buy the equipment, not just the ingredients. The step the tutorial does not underline, and the one players skip most.
  4. Find the ingredients. Vendors are scattered and nothing marks them on screen. Where to buy ingredients covers the sourcing routes, including the two free ones — greenhouse and boat.
  5. Plant one crop. First Harvest — "Plant and harvest something in the greenhouse" — is the cheapest early win and the gateway to the greenhouse system.
  6. Ignore the second venue. Permit-gated, and the worst hour-one goal.

The first-hour achievement ladder

Steam publishes a global unlock rate for all 120 achievements. Read as a funnel, they show where hour one leaks. Snapshot: 30 September 2026; these move hourly.

Achievement Official description Unlocked by
First customer You have served the first customer. 82.4%
First 4* Review Get your first 4* review. 81.0%
Noodle Bar Introduction Hidden — no official description published 71.7%
Offer Drinks Offer drinks on the menu in one of your venues. 55.6%
First Harvest Plant and harvest something in the greenhouse. 21.2%
Collectable Menu Found Find an old collectable menu card. 19.8%
Handle a Complaint Handle a complaint from one of your customers. 18.9%
Offer a Dessert Put a dessert on your restaurant's menu. 15.5%
Own 2 Venues Start operating 2 venues. You need to gain a permit to lease your second venue. 2.6%
Debt Free You did it! Ramen Noir is debt-free. Congratulations! 0.6%

The shape is the useful part. Serving a first customer is nearly universal. Putting a drink on the menu costs roughly a quarter of owners. By the dessert, six players in seven have not got there. Almost nobody has opened a second venue or cleared the starting debt in hour one.

The one milestone to check after your first customer

Open your Steam achievements and find Offer Drinks. It is the cheapest meaningful milestone in the game and the one most beginner guides skip. 55.6% of owners have it; if you do not, your menu is not built yet.

Where new players actually get stuck

All five are player reports, not mechanics. No official source describes any of them.

1. The very first restock will not complete. A 153-upvote review is plain about it: "restocking the noodle stand the first time won't complete unless you buy extra ingredients because your cook is using ingredients while you shop." If the noodle stand task refuses to finish, buy more than the panel asks for.

2. Nobody can tell you which vendor sells ramen. No vendor marker, no local map. One day-four player describes the scale: "There are vast amounts of ingredients, furniture, restaurant equipment from so many vendors to track down." Another calls the result "try to find ramen at the bottom of the greengrocer menu sim." Open every stall panel in the market strips and note which carry your dish. The map and districts guide covers the fast-travel hubs.

3. Staff can take your order away. One player reports standing beside a finished order for an impatient customer, unable to collect it because hired staff had reserved it and took too long to arrive. A second concludes managers are worse — hiring one early is worse than doing the work yourself, because they "drive your business to the ground so fast." The two accounts disagree, and 505 publishes no staff behaviour rules at all. The manager and staff page separates what is confirmed from what is not.

4. A Day 1 quest can point into a district you cannot reach. One review is specific: "Day 1 I got a quest that wanted me to go into an area that needed 20 achievement points to unlock! Now it's stuck in my HUD until I get those." No official text describes an achievement-points gate, so treat the mechanism as unverified — but do not read a wedged quest as a bug in your own progress. The quest system page covers the HUD complaints.

5. Progress you cannot bank. One player with 9 hours logged reports "There is no auto or quick-save" plus a memory leak after alt-tabbing. 505's FAQ says the game autosaves at the end of each day and saves manually from the pause menu, and Steam lists Save Anytime — so one of those accounts is wrong. Save from the pause menu before closing anyway, and read the saves and stuck-problems page.

Correct one thing before you start

Shallow guides claim that in your own venue you can only restock and manage staff, never cook or serve. A German-language review corrects exactly that: someone with almost no playtime wrote it, and "Das stimmt so nicht, beides ist möglich" — that is not correct, both are possible. You can cook and serve yourself; the game just never says so clearly.

What to skip in hour one

A second venue. Permit-gated; 2.6% of owners have that achievement. Five venues sits at 0.1%. That is your ceiling for day one.

Long expeditions. At least one player reports in-game time keeps running continuously while you explore. No official source gives the length of a day or the curfew hour — the curfew and day-night page covers what is known. Treat wandering as something to do after the first customer.

Panic over frame rate. It is the loudest launch complaint and unrelated to what you did in hour one. Performance issues and Steam Deck status cover it.

What 505 has not documented

The amount you owe on Ramen Noir and how interest is charged. What a permit costs, how many tiers exist, how you qualify. Which vendor sells which ingredient. Whether an achievement threshold gates districts. The length of a day or the curfew hour. Staff wages, and what any hire does mechanically.

Official source: Nivalis Nights on Steam — store description and Features list; the official 120-achievement list — names, descriptions and global unlock rates; 505's official community FAQ — save and platform answers. Player reports were read from the Steam review feed on 30 September 2026: the store page read "73% of the 1,355 user reviews for this game are positive" and the review API returned 1,438 reviews, 1,057 positive and 381 negative. The two totals count differently and both move hourly.

FAQ

Do I have to run Ramen Noir myself, or can I hire staff? Both. 505 confirms you can hire waiters, cooks and inventory staff, and players confirm cooking and serving yourself. What you cannot do is rely on staff reliably in hour one — reviews describe early staff and manager behaviour going wrong, though none is a confirmed rule.

How much money do I start with? 505 has not published it, and the amount owed on Ramen Noir appears in no official text. Debt Free confirms only that the starting debt is real.

Should I open a second restaurant in my first hour? No. Own 2 Venues states you need a permit to lease a second venue, no official source explains how to get one, and only 2.6% of owners have it at all.

Can I turn off the quest list? Nothing in the official FAQ or the 2026 community Q&A says you can decline a quest or turn off the tracker. Players report the list cannot be dismissed and that an unreachable Day 1 quest stays on screen.
