The city is split into districts with loading screens, not fully open world. Every one of the 19 locations Nivalis Nights officially names.
Nivalis Nights Map: Every Named District in the Game
Nivalis Nights is not a seamless open world. The developer's FAQ says you can "explore certain areas and districts freely, while other parts of the world are background environments," and the March 2026 community Q&A puts it plainer: "The city is divided into large, detailed districts, and there will be loading screens when traveling between them."
The city has 19 places the game names in writing, and they come from an unlikely source: the achievement list. Eighteen have a "Visit X." achievement. The nineteenth, Outer Space, exists only because there is a postcard of it. No district count, no boundary map and no official city map has ever been published.
Those district names are official, not fan invention
If your search landed on Cloudpunk fan wikis and a dozen near-identical Nivalis wiki pages, you have probably read Central Canyon, Hive Mall, Meridian Market and Metro Hub and wondered if the lot was invented. It is not. All four are official Steam achievement names with Valve's own descriptions attached.
Official source: Nivalis Nights :: Global Achievements on Steam
Central Canyon — "Visit Central Canyon." · Hive Mall — "Visit Hive Mall." · Meridian Market — "Visit Meridian Market." · Metro Hub — "Visit Metro Hub."
That is the correction worth making, and also the limit of what it proves.
"Visit Helix Monumental." tells you the location is real, reachable and tracked. It does not tell you how many districts Nivalis has, where any of them begin or end, whether that is a district or one venue inside one, or whether a twentieth place arrives in a patch. Any page handing you a district count or a street layout for this city is guessing.
All 19 named places, by how many players have set foot in them
Rates are Steam's "% of all players" figures, pulled at about 14:52 UTC on September 30, 2026, two days after launch. They move hourly. The full 120-achievement table is on our achievements page.
| Place | % of players | What the developers have actually said |
|---|---|---|
| Lowtown | 100.0% | Nothing. The only location achievement every player owns. |
| Meridian Market | 95.9% | "Located in the heart of the city." Thaddeus Carminus leaves you his noodle bar here. |
| Docks | 44.4% | Your boat hub: "retreat to the docks to explore the city by boat". |
| Metro Hub | 38.6% | "The city's intricate subway system - centered around The Metro Hub." |
| Eastern Residential | 31.3% | Nothing. |
| The Stacks | 26.8% | Nothing, though an apartment is named "Stacks Unit 1804-C". |
| Central Canyon | 19.0% | Nothing. |
| Industrial District | 14.4% | "A fast train connects the industrial district to its distinctive, peaceful pier." |
| Oil Rig | 9.5% | Nothing, but another achievement reads "Spread seeds on the Oil Rig". |
| Sewers | 9.2% | Nothing. |
| Seaside Boardwalk | 7.7% | Crowded streets, hidden alleys, a restaurant terrace, and "you can't call the police here". |
| Mountain Town | 5.7% | Nothing. |
| Hive Mall | 3.7% | Nothing. |
| Helix Monumental | 2.8% | Nothing. |
| Space Port | 2.5% | Nothing. |
| Skyhigh Gardens | 1.7% | "Gardens in the sky." Torii gates, wooden bridges, a restaurant above the clouds. |
| Calypso Island | 1.3% | "The warm Calypso Island", a port. Salt Pete runs a makeshift ferry. |
| Spire | 1.2% | Nothing. |
| Outer Space | 0.1% (postcard only) | Nothing. No "Visit Outer Space" achievement exists, only a postcard of it. |
How big is the city, by the only measure that exists
There is no official area count, so read the curve. It descends with no puzzle logic in it, and everything from Oil Rig downward sits under 10%.
The median player has stood in three of the eighteen visitable places. Roughly one player in seventy has reached Calypso Island. That is what progressive unlocking looks like, and the developer confirms the mechanism without giving numbers: "As you progress through the story, you'll also unlock new locations to explore."
The curve cannot prove eighteen is final. It is the number of places Valve shipped an achievement for, and a district can exist without one, exactly as Outer Space does. For business planning, assume more space opens up than the list shows — the business guide covers why the economy needs that.
Only seven of the nineteen have a real description
That split is why so many competing pages are confidently wrong. Four of those seven descriptions were published pre-launch in monthly community blogs, and one is effectively a progression rule. On Skyhigh Gardens, the September 2025 devlog: "As you become more familiar - and, as a result, start making a name for yourself in its streets - you'll feel the need to explore its more exclusive areas and expand your business as high as possible."

Is it open world? The developer's exact words
Official source: Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs (2026) Official source: Nivalis Nights on the Steam store
Asked "Will Nivalis Nights be open world like Cloudpunk?", the FAQ answers: "Nivalis Nights isn't fully 'open world'. You can explore certain areas and districts freely, while other parts of the world are background environments." The March 2026 Q&A adds that within each district you can freely explore everything, "including the interiors of most of the businesses."
The store page never uses the phrase. The only "Open World" strings on it are Cloudpunk's tags inside the bundle entry and the user-applied tag cloud, which is a crowd vote, not a Valve designation. The first-person camera is deliberate for the same city-scale reason, covered in our third-person page.
Fast travel: what actually moves you
| Method | Official wording |
|---|---|
| Taxi | "You travel between districts using taxis that connect the entire city" (FAQ) |
| Subway | "The city's intricate subway system - centered around The Metro Hub" (Sept 2025) |
| Flying taxi | "The flying taxi service provided to Nivalis citizens" (Sept 2025), the stated route to Skyhigh Gardens |
| Fast train | "A fast train connects the industrial district to its distinctive, peaceful pier" (Nov 2025) |
| Boat | "You can steer a boat, though!" (FAQ) |
| Car | "You can't drive a car directly" (FAQ) — not at launch, never promised |
No source says what a ride costs, how the modes interact, or whether one unlock gates another. The transit spine is Metro Hub, and none of the six rarest places on the list is described as being on it. One Brazilian player reports the taxi ride is a short cutscene that teleports you rather than a drive, and refunded over it.
Getting around with no documented minimap
The game has never said. The FAQ mentions no map, minimap or waypoint, and the developer's pinned "Read First / Known Issues" thread, updated on launch day, lists six categories under active work: performance, quests, NPC movement, venue item placement, Steam Deck, and visual clipping. Navigation is not one of them, and no patch notes had shipped as of September 30, 2026. The map is neither confirmed broken nor confirmed being fixed.
Player reports are a genuine split. Of the 100 reviews the public Steam review API returned at the time of writing, 7 mention the map, district travel or waypoints.
- The design case: "split into manageable districts that you're meant to familiarize yourself with via landmark memorization; no mini-map, but quests are directionally marked as you move around."
- The opposite case, same sample: "everything looks exactly the same so it's impossible to get around without" help, since a waypoint-free design only works when districts look different.
- The clearest ask is its own thread, "Honestly I need more of a map, and a way to SLOW down the game's passage of time", posted September 30: "I truly want a mini map of some sort, that shows me, where certain vendors I've met are." The lone reply cuts against it: "The map i dont need. Since the areas are actually not as big as one may think."
Everything here is player-derived, not documented. Bounce between districts on the fast-travel screen instead of walking an invisible route. Pick two or three unmissable vertical landmarks per district and use them as compass points. Read the quest HUD marker as a bearing, not a route. And check bins and side streets, because that is how one player found a quest item mid-argument about the map. Starting out? Our beginner guide covers the first hour.
What has never been published
No district count, no boundaries, no per-district unlock requirement and no map image exist in any official source. The closest candidate is the September 11, 2026 "Your Tourist Map" post, which shares a brochure giving "an overview of the key areas and activities" but names no area in its text. How you reach Outer Space is undocumented: postcard-only, with no transport method named anywhere.
FAQ
How many districts does Nivalis Nights have? Never stated. Nineteen is the number of places the game names in writing — eighteen Visit achievements plus a postcard of Outer Space. Treat it as the official floor, not a district count.
Is Nivalis Nights an open world game? Not fully, by the developer's own answer. The city is divided into large, detailed districts with loading screens between them, and other parts of the world are background environments.
What are the Nivalis Nights districts? The eighteen places in the table above, each with an official Visit achievement, plus Outer Space, which has a postcard achievement and nothing else. That is the complete list of officially named locations.
Is there fast travel? Yes: taxis, which the FAQ says "connect the entire city". The subway centers on Metro Hub, a flying taxi serves Skyhigh Gardens, a fast train links the industrial district to Seaside Boardwalk's pier, and you can steer a boat. You cannot drive a car.
How do I unlock new districts? Locations unlock as the story progresses, and the Skyhigh Gardens devlog implies establishment opens the more exclusive areas. No source gives a per-district requirement; the one number circulating, 20 achievement points, comes from a single player report.
