505 confirms 100 quests. Why the quest list is welded to your HUD, why you cannot turn it off, and what players report about sequencing.
Nivalis Nights Quests and Commissions: The 100-Quest System
505 has published exactly one hard number about this system — 100 quests — and not a single quest name, trigger, objective or reward. There is no verified list of the 100 anywhere. This page covers how the system works, why the quest log is welded to your HUD with no way to close it, and what players hit in week one.
Where the 100-quest number comes from
Two official sources talk about quests, and they are not the same kind of statement.
| Official source | Date | What it actually says |
|---|---|---|
| May 2026 Development Update: Optimization | 30 May 2026 | "Managing the game's extensive content — which includes over 240 ingredients, 190 meals, 100 quests, and 620 furniture items — presents significant demands for both performance and readability." |
| COMMUNITY Q&A | 31 March 2026 | "You'll spend a lot of your time following quests across the city, unraveling the mysteries of the plot..." No count given. |
Notice where 100 lives. It is one clause inside a sentence about interface load, in a performance devlog that also counts "over 40 distinct windows, panels, and interface elements". It was written as a readability problem, not a feature announcement.
The marketing copy is where the word quest is thinnest. The standalone word appears exactly once on the whole store page, and not in About This Game or the Features list — those sell "Discover the stories of the people you meet in the city" with no mention of tasks. That one appearance is in the developer-authored Mature Content Description: "The game occasionally features characters in revealing outfits. One quest includes depictions of corpses." So quest is the developer's own word for this system, but they never counted, named or listed any of them.

Quests or commissions? Only "quests" is official
The word commission appears zero times in the whole 34-item official news feed, the FAQ thread, the known-issues thread and the store page. 505 writes quests and side quests, including as the heading of its own bug list. Players search "commissions" because a commission sounds like work someone hands you and expects back — that synonym is the complaint.
The quest log cannot be closed
I cursor-paginated the Steam review API on 30 September 2026 and pulled 900 reviews; 97 contain the word "quest". These describe the HUD itself:
"you can't turn off the quest markers, or select which quests you have active. So half your screen is covered by a list of quests that goes from the top of your screen to the bottom, and the rest is cluttered in icons." — 63 upvotes at time of reading, 30 September
"There is no way to toggle off the current quests window" — 6 upvotes, from a positive review, 29 September
"The quest tracker is lacking. I have an early quest permanently stuck with no way to remove/untrack it." — 13 upvotes, 30 September
That the quietest complaint comes from someone who recommends the game matters. Officially the quest list is atmosphere; in practice it reads as a work order.
A 20-post thread called "No Hud Disable????" asks the same question. The community's best answer is photo mode — one player writes you can "move around with no hud" from the escape menu — and then lands on the catch: "The game is frozen in time when you do photo mode." A thread titled "HOLD J TO DISABLE QUEST MENU ON SCREEN", opened 30 September, has zero replies. Nobody confirmed that key.
505's FAQ confirms photo mode exists. It is the only state any player has documented with no HUD — and the world freezes while you are in it. Use it for looking at the city, not for running deliveries.
"In order" has no official answer, and players report the opposite
No developer has ever published a quest sequence. What players report is clustering:
"Quests / character events seem to be a bit clustered/not sequenced correctly. Day 1 I got a quest that wanted me to go into an area that needed 20 achievement points to unlock! Now it's stuck in my HUD until I get those. Depending how you explore the same character will appear for one thing, then reappear immediately after..." — 6 upvotes, 29 September
The "20 achievement points" gate exists only in that player's words. No official text describes it, so do not treat it as a rule — but do treat a wedged quest as a tracker problem, not lost progress.
Two more reports of the same shape: a German reviewer, 29 upvotes, did exactly what the tutorial quest asked — buy 5 onions, 5 chicken and 5 egg noodles, then store them — and "Die Quest hat den Schritt bei mir aber nicht registriert und ging nicht weiter". Another player, 7 upvotes, got "a quest to drop a rat, but I can't take it out of my inventory".
Here is the entire official quest bug list. 505's pinned known-issues thread carries one quest line: "Quests: fixing minor dialogue issues in a small number of quests." Dialogue. Nothing about tracking, list overflow, unlocks or sequencing.
What 505 thinks the quest list is for
A locked thread called City Life feels like a "TO-DO" List holds the clearest official statement, from the developer account CalmDownTom, since deleted:
"This is YOUR cyberpunk life. There's no rush. Breathe it in. City life is stressful if you treat it like a to-do list."
A player replied that this is not what Day 1 feels like — "you're given a 'TO-DO list' right off the bat, starting with Ava... there doesn't seem to be any choice as you run around the city checking off boxes while the clock ticks away." The developer marked that as the answer: "Better we just take this feedback onboard and think about how we balance things in future."
Official source: City Life feels like a "TO-DO" List — developer post, player reply and marked answer.
Can you decline or untrack a quest? Nobody has published the answer
Read the whole of 505's official FAQ — 38 questions under seven headings: GENERAL, GAME, TECHNICAL INFO, PERFORMANCE, TROUBLESHOOTING, SAVING and REPORTING A BUG. The word "quest" appears exactly once in it, inside the word "request", in the answer to the content-creator question. No mention of a HUD, quest log, tracker, journal or marker anywhere in the file.
The closest official answer is about story, not tasks: "players have opportunities to make choices that influence your experience, shape relationships, and uncover different aspects of life in Nivalis Nights."
So whether you can decline a commission, or remove one from the tracker, is not published. Players report the opposite: you cannot pick which quests you track, the log "takes up about 1/4th the screen and can't be removed", and — one claim with no source — turning quests down hurts relationships.
Achievements are the only progress ruler you have
With no quest list published, Steam's 120 achievements are the only public measure of quest progress. Snapshot 30 September 2026; these move hourly. Eight story-flagged achievements have hidden descriptions and sit at the 0.1% display floor — Lost Child, Find Love, Where is Ava?, Thaddeus Mystery among them — with The Network at 0.3% and Fauxter's Band at 0.2%.
Three achievements read like actual commissions, and are the closest official artifact to a quest description that exists: one named character, one objective, one condition.
| Achievement | Official description | Unlocked by |
|---|---|---|
| Rat Whisperer | Help rat whisperer Gladstone on a secret mission during curfew. | 0.1% |
| Coffee Time | Nivalis needs caffeine. Deliver 3 runs of coffee for Coffee PoccoCup. | 0.1% |
| Ma Gomba's Gift | Grow poisonous mushrooms for Ma Gomba. | 0.2% |
Every one is under a third of one percent of owners on day one. The full table is in all 120 achievements.
What to do with a list you cannot control
- Do not read list order as intended order. No official sequence exists. Follow the main line if you care about the story.
- Ignore quests pointing somewhere unreachable. With no official achievement gate documented, an unstartable quest is a tracker problem, not lost progress.
- Check where the objective actually is. One reviewer notes there is "no indication on HUD if a quest is in your current area or in a different one"; the map guide covers the layout.
- Save before a long trip. A tracker full of stuck quests is when you want a clean save point — see saves and stuck problems. The beginner guide has a sensible opening order.
Method: 900 reviews pulled 30 September 2026 via cursor pagination; the store page read "73% of the 1,392 user reviews" and the API summary reported 1,438 total — different counting, both moving hourly. Rates are from Steam's official achievement page. No patch notes had been published as of launch on 29 September 2026.
FAQ
Is there a list of all 100 Nivalis Nights quests? No. 505 published the count once, in a May 2026 UI devlog, and never a name, trigger, objective or reward. Any site showing a "complete" list is showing its own guess.
Can you decline or refuse a quest in Nivalis Nights? Officially unknown. The FAQ never mentions quests; the known-issues list covers only quest dialogue. Players report you cannot pick which quests are tracked.
Why can't I turn off the quest markers? Nothing official offers a toggle. Photo mode is the only documented HUD-free state and it freezes time. The "hold J" claim sits on Steam with zero replies.
Are Nivalis Nights quests in order? No official order exists. Players report events are clustered, with one describing a Day 1 quest pointing into a locked district.
Quests or commissions? The same system. 505 only writes "quests" and "side quests"; the community's word is the complaint. What the story flags prove is in the endings page.
