Official answer: no character creation, no avatar, only your arms and hands are visible. Here is what you can customize instead, and why.
Nivalis Nights Character Creation: Can You Customize?
No. There is no character creation, no avatar screen, and nothing to choose. The developer answers the question "Can I customize my character in Nivalis Nights?" with "Currently, Nivalis Nights does not offer character customization," and adds that "The only visible parts of the body are your arms and hands." What you do customize in this game is where you live and how your business looks.
- No creator menu, no body sliders, no wardrobe picker, at launch on 29 September 2026.
- First person, deliberately: only your arms and hands are ever on screen.
- No third-person camera, no multiplayer, no planned co-op.
- No name, no gender — and the developer has questioned what they would be for.
The Official Answer, Word for Word
The answer lives in the pinned Steam thread Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs (2026), posted by Camilla505 on 30 June 2025 and still maintained — when I pulled it on 30 September 2026 it showed a last edit roughly 19 hours earlier, so it had just been re-checked after launch day.
Can I customize my character in Nivalis Nights?
Currently, Nivalis Nights does not offer character customization. The game is designed to place you directly at the center of the experience, without the use of a virtual avatar. The only visible parts of the body are your arms and hands.
Official source: Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs (2026)
The same flat answer holds everywhere a builder would be advertised. The Steam store page contains zero occurrences of "character creation" and zero of "first person" — I checked the live page on 30 September 2026 — and its single customization bullet is "Decorate your home(s) or customize others for friends." The publisher's 505 Games page says you can "customize your home to perfection", never that you can customize an avatar.

Why There Is No Avatar
The stated reason is a design choice, not a leftover limitation: "The game is designed to place you directly at the center of the experience, without the use of a virtual avatar." The companion camera answer spells out the philosophy — the game "is played in a first person perspective. This is intentional, as we want the player to experience the immense scale of the city and to truly feel immersive."
One detail from the same FAQ explains why the NPCs aren't voxels. The team began with a Voxel Art character style, hit limitations testing animations, and switched to "traditional character meshes with detailed faces and smooth features that allow for more believable animations." The cast got that fidelity for animation's sake; the player character got none, because it is not a model you ever look at.
It describes the game you can buy today, not a refusal to ever add one.
What You Can Actually Customize
The customization this game does have is spatial and commercial. Every row is from an official source, not a wiki.
| Target | What actually changes | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Your apartments | "paintings, lights, furniture and more"; some include "balconies and terraces" | Publisher FAQ |
| Your furniture catalogue | 620 furniture items, sold by vendors "all around the city" | May 2026 devlog; August 2025 blog |
| How many homes you hold | "more than ten apartments", from "a minimal studio apartment to a cozy loft, or even a beautiful standalone house on Calypso Island" | May 2024 blog; August 2025 blog |
| Your venues | Noodle stands, hole-in-the-wall bars, restaurants and nightclubs are all yours to run and fit out | Launch announcement; store page |
| Other people's homes | "It's not just about your restaurants, but also your apartments, or even decorating spaces for clients who are willing to pay for it" | COMMUNITY Q&A, 31 March 2026 |
| Recipes | "you'll unlock new recipes and even customize them" | COMMUNITY Q&A, 31 March 2026 |
Official source: Steam news feed for Nivalis Nights — COMMUNITY Q&A (31 March 2026) and the May 2026 optimization devlog, both read 30 September 2026.
Two caveats. The 620 furniture items, 240+ ingredients, 190 meals and 100 quests are pre-launch figures from the May 2026 devlog, and 505 has published no per-item list or unlock condition. The paid client jobs are described but never specified: who hires you, what they want, what it pays.
Can You Rename the Protagonist or Pick a Gender?
This is the part the FAQ never gets around to, because it never promised it. The evidence sits in a Steam thread titled Why no character creation?, opened 18 September 2026, eleven days before release, grown to 126 posts by the time I read it. A developer account, CalmDownTom, replied three times.
- 19 September: "We understand. It might be something we think about in the future,"
- 21 September: "We might look at the arms if a lot of people have an issue with them, and character creation too. I'm not sure what the purpose would be of choosing a name and gender if we don't see ourselves in game?"
- 21 September: "I'm not sure it's needed. It hasn't come up as an issue for playtesters so far. We could revisit it if a lot of people had an issue, sure."
That is a conditional non-answer: nobody promised a name field, nobody gave a date, and the bar is "a lot of people" raising it. The game then launched, and the freshly edited FAQ still says no customization. If you are buying to play a character you named and gendered, buy assuming you cannot.
One claim in that thread needs a flag, not a fact: a user asked for "a male hands/forearms option 'cuz I've only seen female hands/forearms so far." That is a pre-release player observation, the developer never named the forearms, and I could not confirm independently which ones ship. Treat arm gender as unknown, not as a missing feature.
The Answers That Get Blended Into This One
Search results keep dragging in neighbouring topics. All four have confirmed answers:
| Question | Confirmed answer |
|---|---|
| Is it first person? | Yes, and "This is intentional, as we want the player to experience the immense scale of the city and to truly feel immersive" |
| Is there a third-person toggle? | None has ever been announced; the camera question gets the same intentional-first-person answer |
| Is there co-op or multiplayer? | "Nivalis Nights is designed as a single-player experience, and there are no multiplayer or co-op features planned" |
| Is it moddable? | "This isn't part of the game's scope at the moment" — though community BepInEx mods exist anyway |
The third-person page covers what the camera decision means for motion sickness, and the multiplayer page covers where the social layer lives. Neither changes the fact that there is no avatar to design.
One guide competing for this keyword titles itself "Nivalis Nights Character Customization & Models Guide", answers "Can you customize your character?" with "Yes, but with specific boundaries", and lists "Wardrobe jackets, cybernetic arm coatings, watch accessories, color palettes" as "Confirmed across official gameplay footage" and "Confirmed via developer blog wardrobe teasers". Across all 34 posts in the Steam news feed, pulled 30 September 2026, the five hits for "customize", "customise" and "customizable" all refer to a residence, a recipe or a greenhouse, and "wardrobe", "outfit", "jacket", "clothing" and "clothes" return nothing. The store page's only customization bullet is the home one, and its one "outfit" sits in the Mature Content Description, not a wardrobe feature. The 120-achievement list is as silent on all four words. Meridian Market, the district that guide sends you to for tailoring, is real — it has achievements of its own, "Visit Meridian Market." and "Collect a postcard of Meridian Market." — but no official source has ever described a clothing shop inside it.
FAQ
Can you customize your character in Nivalis Nights? No. The publisher's FAQ says the game "does not offer character customization" and that "The only visible parts of the body are your arms and hands."
Can I pick my character's name or gender? Not currently, and the developer has said they are not sure what picking them would accomplish in a game where you never see yourself. The replies are conditional, not a commitment.
Is there a creator menu in the DLC? No. The only DLC at launch is the Nivalis Nights Soundtrack, music only.
Why can I only see my arms and hands? Because the game is first person by design: the NPC with the detailed face is always in front of you, and your own body is not rendered.
Can photo mode change how my character looks? Photo mode exists — the FAQ answers that with "Yes!" — but it is described as a way to capture the city's atmosphere, not as an appearance tool.
Will character creation ever be added? Unknown. "It might be something we think about in the future" is the whole of it. No patch, roadmap entry or date as of 30 September 2026.
